What We Do

The ASA hosts events throughout the semester, and also offers volunteer, leadership, presentation, and field trip opportunities to its members

Meet An Anthropologist: Hosted every semesters Meet an Anthropologist features a panel of guest speakers who are actively practicing anthropology or social sciences. The objective of this event is to expose members to different fields of research and applied anthropology. In the past, speakers have come from the UNT Department of Anthropology, the UNT College of Merchandising, Hospitality, and Tourism, the UNT Sociology Department, and the SMU Anthropology Department. We have even spoken with an anthropology student from the University of Oxford in the UK via Skype!

Life After College: Not sure how to utilize your anthropology degree after undergrad? We have you covered! Life After College is the second event hosted each semester. Similar to Meet An Anthropologist, the ASA arranges for a new panel of speakers to help educate members on all of the post-undergraduate options in anthropology. Hear from graduate students, various anthropology faculty from UNT and other universities, and Career Center staff to browse options such as graduate school, the Peace Corps, and internships.

Student Presentations: Throughout the semester, we like to offer members a safe, comfortable environment to gain experience presenting research or personal interest projects in front of an audience. Past members have presented on topics such as artificial intelligence, GIS, history and anthropology of Valentine's Day, evolutionary psychology, music history and ethnomusicology, internet culture, and more. If you have a topic you are particularly interested in and would like to participate, let an officer know and we will arrange a day for you to present. Officers often present during the semester as well. Presentations are not required for active membership in the ASA.

Field Trips: Join the ASA on fun, inspiring, and educational field trips! In previous semesters, the ASA has ventured to Fort Worth, Central Texas, Oklahoma, and Arlington to view archaeological sites, the Dead Sea Scrolls Exhibit, museums, and lecture series. Fun fact: In fall 2016, the ASA traveled to the UTA campus to hear famous anthropologist and primatologist Jane Goodall speak for a lecture series. Stay tuned for updates on where we will go next!

Volunteer/Community Service Opportunities: There are two nationally recognized days of service that UNT participates in university-wide each semester; Make A Difference Day in the fall, and The Big Event in the spring. ASA teams up with hundreds of other UNT students at each of these events to perform community service throughout Denton County. We have volunteered with organizations around Denton County such as SCRAP Denton and the Lewisville Lake Environmental Learning Area. In the near future, we are anticipating scheduling more volunteer workshops with SCRAP Denton, the UNT Food Pantry, Denton Jazz Fest, Keep Denton Beautiful, and the Linda McNatt Denton Animal Shelter. You can find out where we will volunteer next via our Facebook, Twitter, and Google calendar on Blogspot

Leadership Positions: The ASA offers leadership experience in the form of five officer positions; President, Vice President, Treasurer, Public Relations and Communications, and Volunteer Outreach. Each of these positions plays a valuable role in maintaining productivity and professionalism in the organization. Our officers are elected in May, during the last meeting, at the end of every school year. Officers who already hold a spot must run again if they wish to keep that position or move to another. The positions of President and Vice President are only available to officers who have previously held an officer position for one full school year. Only dues paying members may vote in the elections.

Weekly Meetings: During meetings, members partake in planned activities such as game nights, movie nights, group discussions, student presentations, events such as Meet An Anthropologist and Life After College, and on special occasions...free food! Meetings are also used by the officers to announce event logistics and important information from the department. Active members are encouraged to attend as many meetings as possible, especially if interested in running for an officer position. Meeting dates for fall 2017 are in the works and will be announced closer to the start of the semester.
